On June 6, 1944, the Allied forces began Operation Overlord, the largest amphibious landing operation in history. The scene shows the moment when soldiers leave their landing boats and wade through shallow water to the Normandy coast—one of the central phases of D-Day. Jack Lieb filmed the landing as part of the naval element of the 82nd Airborne Division at Utah Beach and captured this section of the invasion in rare color footage. The designation of the vessel (PA26-30) refers to an Attack Transport Ship of the U.S. Navy serving as the transport ship.
