On 6 June 1944, Allied troops landed on several sections of the Normandy coast as part of Operation Overlord. This still from Jack Lieb’s private 16-mm Kodachrome material shows British soldiers leaving a landing boat in shallow coastal waters — one of the rare color documentations of the invasion, which otherwise survives almost exclusively in black and white. The photograph belongs to the landing phase of the film, which forms the core of Lieb’s source material, before the footage follows the advance inland and eventually into Germany.
