Following the landing in Normandy in June 1944, accredited US war correspondents moved with the advancing army into the hinterland. Jack Lieb himself belonged to this group, which reported for Hearst and other American media outlets. The scene is situated in the middle section of Lieb’s film, which documents the advance from the coast into the interior. Lieb’s 16mm Kodachrome footage represents one of the few color records of this section of the Western Front.
