In the summer of 1944, US troops and war correspondents organized the first recreational offerings behind the lines in liberated Normandy. The banner above the entrance announces a ‘Normandy World Premiere’ of the Hollywood film ‘Casanova Brown’ (starring Gary Cooper and Teresa Wright) — a sign of the rapid normalization of everyday life in the liberated areas. Jack Lieb documented these everyday scenes in the Normandy hinterland as part of his color film, which captured not only the combat operations but also the lives of soldiers and correspondents behind the lines.
