Following the landing in Normandy in June 1944, numerous American war correspondents operated in the liberated rear areas and accompanied the Allied advance. Jack Lieb captured such encounters with colleagues—including Ernie Pyle, Jack Thompson, and Larry LeSueur—in color, while the vast majority of comparable photographs survive in black and white. The medieval stone gateway in the background points to the characteristic Norman villages through which the Allies moved in this phase of the campaign.
