Jack Lieb documented in the summer of 1944, alongside military operations, everyday scenes of the Norman civilian population in color. Such photographs of children belong to the documentary interstices of his film, which show the life of the population in liberated Normandy. The region had come gradually under Allied control following the fighting in June and July 1944; Lieb’s color footage is among the few surviving contemporary color documents of this phase.
