The photograph comes from the phase in which Jack Lieb, following the landing at Utah Beach, documented the Normandy hinterland. Alongside military subjects, he also captured everyday scenes of the local population. Such images of civilian life in the midst of wartime events are characteristic of Lieb’s personal film material and distinguish it from purely military newsreel footage.
