The photograph was taken in the summer of 1944 in Normandy during Jack Lieb’s accompaniment of the Allied forces following the invasion. It belongs to the everyday scenes that Lieb captured away from direct combat and which, in the editing of his lecture film, document the life of the local population in the liberated region. Such snapshots from the Normandy hinterland form a contrast in the film to the footage of Atlantic Wall fortifications, prisoners of war, and military operations.
