On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during the landing maneuver in Lakehurst, New Jersey, and burned completely within approximately half a minute. The still image shows the airship in the phase of burning descent — the steel frame is already exposed, the tail has reached the ground. Of the 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives. The disaster marked the end of the era of commercial passenger airship travel.
