On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg burned completely within seconds during the mooring maneuver at Lakehurst, New Jersey. The photograph shows the immediate aftermath of the disaster: the aluminum framework of the airship has collapsed to the ground while dense smoke rises and rescue personnel reach the site. Of the 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives. The accident is considered the end of commercial passenger airship transportation.
