The photograph shows the Hindenburg (D-LZ 129) still intact on approach to the naval base at Lakehurst, New Jersey. This was the Zeppelin’s final transatlantic crossing; shortly thereafter, during the mooring maneuver at the mooring mast, the airship caught fire and burned completely in approximately half a minute. Of the 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives.
