The photograph shows the Hindenburg (LZ 129) still intact on approach to the naval station at Lakehurst, New Jersey. This was the airship’s final voyage: only hours after such overflight shots, the hydrogen-filled airship caught fire during the docking maneuver at the mooring mast and burned out completely in approximately half a minute. 36 of the 97 people on board perished. The disaster of May 6, 1937 is regarded as the end of commercial passenger airship service.
