The photograph shows the Hindenburg (LZ 129) still undamaged in flight — in the approach phase to Lakehurst, New Jersey, on the day of the disaster. The airship had previously flown over New York City and was approaching the naval base for mooring operations at the mooring mast. Minutes after this stage, the Hindenburg caught fire during landing and burned out completely within seconds; 36 of the 97 people on board lost their lives.
