The photograph shows the Hindenburg (D-LZ 129) still undamaged in flight during its approach to the Naval Station at Lakehurst, New Jersey. This was the final leg of the Zeppelin’s transatlantic journey from Germany to New Jersey. Minutes after the docking maneuver at the mooring mast on May 6, 1937, the hydrogen-filled airship caught fire and burned completely in approximately half a minute. 36 of the 97 people on board perished.
