The photograph shows the Hindenburg (LZ 129) still intact in flight during the approach phase to Lakehurst, New Jersey. This was the final stage of the transatlantic crossing, which would end in disaster a short time later. During the mooring maneuver at the mooring mast of the naval air station, the hydrogen-filled airship caught fire on May 6, 1937, and burned completely within minutes; 36 of the 97 people on board perished.
