The photograph shows the Hindenburg in the approach phase over the grounds of the Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey. The mooring mast is visible in the background; a ground crew has positioned itself to assist with landing. This represents the final scheduled approach and mooring phase of the airship before the fire, which broke out during the mooring maneuver and completely destroyed the ship in a very short time. 36 of the 97 people on board perished.
