The photograph shows the Hindenburg (LZ 129) still intact in a low approach shortly before the landing maneuver at Lakehurst. This was the Zeppelin’s final transatlantic crossing; minutes after arriving over the field, the airship caught fire while mooring to the mooring mast. The disaster of May 6, 1937 claimed 36 lives and ended the era of commercial passenger airship service.
