The image shows the approach phase of the Hindenburg over the landing field of the naval air station Lakehurst, New Jersey, on May 6, 1937. The airship LZ 129 is at this point still undamaged; on the ground the ground crew is positioned for the mooring maneuver. Minutes later, while mooring at the mooring mast, the hydrogen-filled airship caught fire and burned completely within half a minute. 36 of the 97 people on board perished.
