The photograph shows the Hindenburg in the approach phase over Lakehurst, where the ground crew was already standing by for the docking maneuver. Mooring at the mooring mast was a routine procedure and was documented by several film teams during this North American flight. Minutes after this phase, the hydrogen-filled airship caught fire and burned completely within a very short time. Of the 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives.
