The photograph shows the Hindenburg (D-LZ129) on approach to the naval base at Lakehurst, New Jersey, on May 6, 1937. The airship was in the final stage of its transatlantic crossing when it caught fire during the mooring maneuver and burned completely in a very short time. This phase — the intact airship immediately before the disaster — was recorded by several newsreel cameras.
