The photograph shows the Hindenburg (LZ 129) during the approach phase of its final transatlantic flight on May 6, 1937, still intact while flying over New York City. The airship was the largest of its time and was considered the pinnacle of German Zeppelin technology. A few hours after this photograph was taken, it caught fire during the mooring maneuver in Lakehurst, New Jersey, and burned completely in approximately half a minute.
