The photograph shows the Hindenburg (LZ 129) during its flight over New York City on May 6, 1937 – the final phase of the transatlantic crossing before the approach to Lakehurst, New Jersey. The overflight of the metropolis was part of the standard approach procedure and was captured by newsreel cameras. A few hours later, during the docking maneuver at the mooring mast in Lakehurst, the hydrogen-filled airship caught fire and burned completely within a very short time.
