On the final leg of its transatlantic crossing, the Hindenburg passed New York City on May 6, 1937, before setting course for the naval air station at Lakehurst, New Jersey. The passage over the metropolis was a scheduled part of the approach route and was captured by newsreel cameras. A few hours later, during the mooring maneuver at the mooring mast in Lakehurst, the hydrogen-filled airship caught fire and burned completely in a matter of minutes.
