The photograph shows the Hindenburg (LZ 129) in flight over New York City—the final leg before the approach to Lakehurst, New Jersey, where the airship caught fire shortly thereafter during the docking maneuver. This is the opening sequence of the newsreel footage from May 6, 1937, which documents the airship still undamaged and in regular flight operation. Hours after this flight over the city, the Hindenburg crashed during landing; 36 of the 97 people on board perished.
