The photograph shows the Hindenburg still in regular flight during the 1937 North America passage. On its way to the naval station at Lakehurst, New Jersey, the airship flew over New York City – a customary part of the transatlantic route at that time. A few hours later, during the mooring maneuver at the mooring mast in Lakehurst, the Hindenburg caught fire and burned completely in approximately half a minute. 36 of the 97 people on board perished.
