The photograph shows the Hindenburg (LZ 129) still undamaged in flight over New York City – the final stage of the Atlantic crossing before the planned landing in Lakehurst, New Jersey. A few hours after this overflight, the airship caught fire during the docking maneuver at the mooring mast: it caught fire and burned completely in approximately half a minute. 36 of the 97 people on board lost their lives. The disaster of May 6, 1937 marked the end of commercial passenger airship travel.
