During his state visit to the Federal Republic of Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy was received by large crowds at several locations. The photograph shows a motorcade with the presidential convoy, accompanied by security personnel and police. The background to the visit was the Cold War and the division of Germany, which had been cemented in 1961 by the construction of the Berlin Wall. Kennedy’s journey was regarded as an important signal of transatlantic solidarity.
