The footage was created in the context of D-Day on June 6, 1944, and belongs to Jack Lieb’s private 16 mm Kodachrome material, which documents the Normandy invasion in rare color footage. Lieb accompanied the landing operations on the Normandy coast as a Hearst newsreel cameraman, including at Utah Beach with an element of the 82nd Airborne Division. The image shows members of the U.S. Armed Forces during a moment of rest in the midst of ongoing operations. Such informal shots are a characteristic feature of Lieb’s private film material, which adds a more personal dimension to the official newsreel footage.
