After the fire of May 6, 1937, what remained of the LZ 129 Hindenburg was the exposed duralumin framework, which had sunk to the ground at Naval Air Station Lakehurst, New Jersey, within less than one minute. The inspection of the wreckage by emergency personnel and investigators formed the final phase of the immediate disaster documentation. The wreck was thoroughly examined in the following days, though the exact cause of the fire could not be definitively determined. The photographs of the destroyed structure became iconic documents in reporting on the end of commercial rigid airship operations.
