After the fire of May 6, 1937, only the deformed duralumin framework remained of LZ 129 Hindenburg. The photograph documents the wreckage inspection phase immediately following the disaster: the entire airship burned out in less than one minute, 36 people lost their lives. The debris of what had once been the world’s largest rigid airship was recorded by newsreel cameras and is considered one of the most striking documents of the end of passenger airship service.
