After the fire of May 6, 1937, only the deformed aluminum framework remained of the LZ 129 Hindenburg. The photograph shows the wreckage at Lakehurst, New Jersey, in the phase of immediate post-disaster inspection. The collapsed lattice structure documents how completely the airship burned out within seconds. The images of the wreckage were among the most widely distributed records of the disaster and shaped the public image of the end of passenger airship transport.
