On May 6, 1937, the German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire during its mooring procedure in Lakehurst, New Jersey. The photograph shows the beginning of the fire immediately after the hydrogen-filled airship ignited. The fire spread across the entire hull within seconds; the airship was completely destroyed within approximately half a minute. Of the 97 people on board, 36 lost their lives.
