This photograph of the Pont Alexandre III spanning the Seine belongs to the Paris section of Lieb’s color film and was taken in August 1944, when Allied troops and French resistance fighters liberated Paris. Built in 1900, the bridge with its gilded sculptures lies in the heart of the city near the Grand Palais and was a notable point along the advance routes through the city center. Lieb’s Kodachrome photographs from this phase are among the rare color documents of the liberation of Paris, which is otherwise predominantly preserved in black and white.
