The image shows the façade of the Opéra Garnier—officially the Académie Nationale de Musique—in liberated Paris in August 1944. The photograph was taken as part of Jack Lieb’s coverage of the Allied advance toward Paris, which was liberated on August 25, 1944, after four years of German occupation. The Second Empire monument remained structurally intact; a French flag on the façade marks the restored Republic. Lieb’s 16-mm Kodachrome material ranks among the rare color documentation of these days.
