The image shows the Palais Garnier, the opera house inaugurated in 1875 in the 9th arrondissement, as part of Jack Lieb’s color documentation of the liberation of Paris in August 1944. Following the entry of Allied and French troops on August 25, 1944, cameramen such as Lieb captured the reclaimed city in its first days of freedom. The Palais Garnier, one of the capital’s most renowned landmarks, had remained in operation during the German occupation (1940–1944) and now stood before the camera as a symbol of liberated Paris. Lieb’s color footage represents a rare color document of this phase of the war.
