Paris was liberated on August 25, 1944 by Allied and French forces, after the city had been under German occupation for four years. The Eiffel Tower, which remained a symbol of the city throughout the entire occupation, was visited by Allied soldiers immediately after the liberation. Jack Lieb captured this moment in color – in contrast to nearly all other documents of the same events, which survive only in black and white. The scene appears in the film sequence during the phase of Paris’s liberation, following the advance from Normandy via Versailles.
