The photograph was taken in May 1944 in London and is part of Jack Lieb’s color documentation of the weeks immediately before the invasion of Normandy. While Allied troops stood ready in southern England for D-Day, Lieb captured everyday civilian life in the British capital with his 16-mm Kodachrome camera. Scenes such as this stand in contrast to military mobilization and illustrate the life of London’s civilian population in the final phase of the war.
