The photograph was taken in spring 1944 in London and belongs to the opening sequence of Lieb’s film, which documents everyday life in the British capital during the preparation phase for the invasion. London at that time was marked by massive Allied deployment preparations; wartime austerity appeals—evident in advertising posters with calls for war savings—shaped the cityscape. Lieb’s private Kodachrome photographs show prewar-like urban life immediately before D-Day in rare color quality.
