Speakers’ Corner in London’s Hyde Park remained a site of public expression even during the Second World War. Jack Lieb was in London in May 1944 to document the preparations for the invasion of Normandy. This footage belongs to the opening phase of his film and documents civilian life in the British capital immediately before D-Day. It contrasts with the subsequent war theaters and conveys an impression of the tense yet still civilian-marked atmosphere of London in the weeks before June 6, 1944.
