The photograph shows the Hindenburg (LZ 129) on approach to the naval air station at Lakehurst, New Jersey, on May 6, 1937. The airship had previously flown over New York City and was now approaching the mooring mast for landing. Minutes later, during the docking maneuver, the hydrogen-filled airship caught fire and burned completely. Of the 97 people on board, 36 perished.
