Following the liberation of Paris in August 1944, Allied and French propaganda films quickly filled urban cinemas. The sign advertises “France Libre – Le journal filmé de la Résistance” and “Monde Libre – Les actualités des nations alliées,” two newsreel series that had replaced German censorship and now supplied the population with images of the war’s progress from an Allied perspective. Jack Lieb captured this scene in the course of his color footage documenting the liberation of Paris, one of the central sections of his film “D-Day to Germany.”
