Paris was liberated on August 25, 1944 by Allied troops and French resistance fighters, after the city had been under German occupation since June 1940. Jack Lieb was in Paris during the days of liberation and documented public life with his 16-mm Kodachrome color camera. This photograph shows Parisian civilians at an outdoor gathering—possibly one of the first public assemblies after the end of the occupation. Lieb’s color material is among the rare color documents of those days, as comparable photographs have been preserved almost exclusively in black and white.
