After the landing at Utah Beach and the capture of Cherbourg, Allied forces advanced eastward through the Normandy interior in the summer of 1944. Combat operations and Allied air attacks left severe destruction in numerous Norman towns. Jack Lieb documented this advance as one of the few cameramen filming in color, thereby recording what other sources have preserved almost exclusively in black and white.
