After the landing at Utah Beach in early June 1944, Allied forces advanced into the Norman hinterland. This photograph shows the motorized and foot-borne advance of U.S. Army units along a country road in Normandy. The gradual territorial gains following D-Day were characterized by fierce fighting in the so-called bocage terrain. As one of the few cameramen, Jack Lieb captured this advance in color.
