After the Allied capture of Cherbourg in late June 1944, the city became the first major port in northern France to fall into Allied hands. War correspondents accompanied the troops on their advance and documented the fighting and its aftermath from close range. Jack Lieb filmed this scene as part of his private Kodachrome material, which captures the campaign from Normandy to Germany in color — a rarity compared to the nearly exclusively black-and-white contemporary footage.
