Cherbourg was captured by U.S. troops on June 26, 1944—a first strategically significant harbor gain for the Allies following the landing in Normandy. Jack Lieb documented the presence of American war correspondents in the city, who accompanied the advance from Utah Beach. Correspondents such as Lieb himself worked closely with the advancing units and supplied the home front with current reports on the war situation in France through newsreels and press contributions.
