Cherbourg was captured by US forces on June 26, 1944, and was the first major deep-water port to fall into Allied hands following the landing in Normandy. War correspondents such as Jack Lieb accompanied the advance from the hinterland close behind combat troops. The capture of Cherbourg was regarded as a strategic key to supplying Allied forces in France. Lieb’s color footage from this phase ranks among the rare color documents of these events.
