After the liberation of Paris on 25 August 1944, Allied forces rapidly advanced into the surrounding cities, including Versailles, which was taken without major fighting. The photograph shows American soldiers halting in front of the Banque de France branch in Versailles—one of the city’s symbolic buildings. Jack Lieb documented this advance with his 16mm Kodachrome camera as part of the sequence that leads from the entry into Paris through Versailles to the further advance toward Germany.
