After the breakthrough from Normandy, Allied forces advanced on Paris via Versailles in August 1944. The city of Versailles, known as the seat of the royal palace and former center of French state power, lay on the southwestern approach axis to the capital. Jack Lieb documented this advance in color — a rare testament to the rapid liberation phase, which culminated a few days later in the liberation of Paris on August 25, 1944. The coexistence of civilian transport and military vehicles on the same road reflects the disordered yet forward-pressing dynamics of these weeks.
