The photograph belongs to the embarkation and landing phase in Lieb’s film and shows US troops in a landing craft during the Normandy invasion of June 6, 1944. Lieb arrived at Utah Beach with a sea-based element of the 82nd Airborne Division and documented the crossing of the English Channel as well as the approach to the French coast. The distinctive character of these photographs lies in their color: while comparable images from D-Day are almost exclusively preserved in black and white, Lieb’s 16-mm Kodachrome material captures the events in original color.
